I find printmaking a really fun and challenging medium to work with and I see it as an extension of my drawing. Much of my work exist as woodblock prints or etchings but I have also made lino prints, screen-prints, monoprints, collagraphs, embossings and lithographs too.
My earlier printmaking practice began with specialising in etching. Etching is a printmaking process that dates back around 500 years. The etching process involves sheets of metal, usually made of copper or zinc, and acid is used to etch the print onto the metal. The artist can use complicated methods to create different effects, but always relies on acid to etch the plate. The more complicated the etching, the more time consuming and labour intensive it will be. I love a challenge and I find the medium very versatile and I love all the different effects you can create.
More recent works have involved me working in woodblock printing, where I hand-carve my designs into Japanese plywood to create striking print images for exhibition and sale. Again, I enjoy the physicality of the process and took to the medium quite easily, probably because of how hands-on it is and my love of working directly with materials to create something really interesting. Many have commented how my finished blocks have a sculptural quality to them and could form artworks themselves as well as the print produced. I do also like as well how woodblock printing has an oriental cultural connection attached to it and this is important to me because I think it is important to know where your roots are.
