CENTRE FOR CHINESE CONTEMPORARY ART (CFCCA), MANCHESTER

"2014 was a very exciting year for me in my career for so many reasons. First and foremost, my artist proposal was shortlisted and selected for the final START arts education project. At this point in time, this was possibly the biggest project that I have worked on to date and it was a wonderful experience indeed. Much of the arts education work I do consist of one-off or short-term sessions, so the opportunity to work with the same group for a couple of months was a welcome one. I relocated down to "sunny Manchester" for the duration of this project and really got to know the city and its people better. The project involved working with Year 8 pupils from Alder Community High School, Tameside, and they took part in a series of art workshops with me, which I planned and delivered (see below). The work was inspired by the Stanley Chow exhibition, The Take-Away (2014), and culminated into a big participatory installation for public exhibition called, The Market (2014). Visitors were then invited to draw out what "value" means to them onto a special 'Bank of CFCCA' bank-note and this could then be exchanged for any item on the different stalls. All the hand-drawn banknotes were then collected in to create a bunting feature in the space, which grew as the exhibition went on. Check out the CFCCA education blog, which features this project's progress: https://engagementcfcca.wordpress.com/category/start-2/alder-highschool/ " ~ Pui Lee
